Nine-year-old Abigail disappears while playing hide and seek on her remote farm outside a village in England, and her twin sister Olivia becomes the titular Silent Twin. The girls are physically alike, but emotionally different. Olivia is quiet and reserved by nature, and Abigail more outgoing and colorful.

This book is dark and the author’s choice of descriptions sets the gloomy mood beginning in the second paragraph: “A sliver of an icy breeze whistles through the rain-rotted wood of the empty cattle sheds, which house freshly hatched spiders and field mice within. It creaks and shivers against the growing gale.” It is a pleasure to read a book where the author’s vocabulary sets the tone so well.

Local police are on the case within hours, and DS Jennifer Knight becomes the family liaison when her first responder colleague refuses to go back to the farm because it creeps her out. Jennifer encounters resistance from every family member: the cheerful mother who dresses in vintage clothes and doesn’t grieve the loss of her daughter, the distraught father who is closed off, and Olivia whose silence and pale coloring make her more a specter than a little girl. There’s also an efficient nanny.

Alternating chapters in the book are journal entries written by a very disturbed person who wants to punish the family. This gives the reader information that the characters are not privy to.

Overall, this is a well written book with well-rounded characters. It is the third in a trilogy but works as a stand alone book.

Amazon Description & Rating

I’m alone in the dark, please can you find me …

Nine-year-old twins Abigail and Olivia vow never to be parted. But when Abigail goes missing from Blackwater Farm, DC Jennifer Knight must find her before it’s too late.

Twin sister Olivia has been mute since Abigail’s disappearance. But when she whispers in Jennifer’s ear, Jennifer realises it is Abigail’s voice pleading to be found.

A damp and decaying house set in acres of desolate scrubland, the farm is a place of secrets, old and new – and Jennifer must unravel them all in order to find the lost girl. But could Olivia’s bond with her twin hold the key to finding Abigail? And can Jennifer break through her silence in time to save her sister’s life?

A darkly gripping, page-turning thriller that will enthrall fans of Rachel Abbott, Alex Marwood’s The Wicked Girls and Mark Edwards.

New Deal Announcement

One of the perks of being an author is getting amazing news like this. I’m thrilled to announce that Crazy Maple Studios (a division of ChineseAll USA Corp) has snapped up The Silent Twin. It will be featured as an interactive story game in the app early next year. With over a million users and counting, it means I’m going to be getting in front of lots of new readers on a whole new platform.

First Crime Story

Chapters – Interactive stories is one of the first of its kind to introduce reader-choice gamification, featuring sci-fi, romance and paranormal genres. The Silent Twin is their very first crime book, and hope that further titles from the DC Jennifer Knight series will follow on. You can download it from the app store or Google Play. As readers follow the story, they make choices as to how it progresses. It’s great fun to play and I can’t wait to see what they do with The Silent Twin.

Evolution of Reading

I feel very fortunate to be working with the fantastic Hayley Steed of the Madeleine Milburn literary agency who brokered the deal. Since the introduction of the Kindle, the way consumers digest books has changed like never before. Now it is set to change again, reaching a whole generation of readers and gamers. We expect The Silent Twin to be launched in spring 2018. I can’t wait to play.
